Wholesome - Healthy eating App Description

Winner of the 2014 Innov8 For health competition, Wholesome is the only experience that collects healthy recipes from the web, allows you to track them, and gives personal recommendations to optimize your nutrition. Wholesome scores recipes out of 10 points on their healthfulness. Points are added for nutrition density and deducted for things like too much sugar or sodium. Scores provide the feedback that allow you to compare recipes and make conscious decisions about what you eat. • Almost There

I find this app helpful and informative, but it’s not everything I need. It is great for pinpointing nutritional deficiencies and discovering new ways to fill the holes. However, to be a one-stop-shop, it needs an all-encompassing database similar to MyFitnessPal. This app lacks a barcode scanner, brand name items (everything is entered as generic items like “yogurt” or “oatmeal”), and a more customizable measuring system. I find myself using both MyFitnessPal and Wholesome, and I’d like to use one app for everything.

Keep getting this error for the last 3 days. Seriously?!? Any possibility of fixing anytime soon? Thx.
  • Not a free app

I don’t mind paying for apps but with so many bad ones out there I want to be able to try them out before I do. This app does not let you add a single item to the food diary without buying the app. It really seems pointless to even offer up the app as free when you have to immediately buy it to use it. A week or a few days of use before requiring purchase would have been great. I’m not willing to take the risk.
  • Awesome app

I was so excited to find this app! I have wanted to list out my diet and figure out what nutrients I'm not getting enough of but had no idea how to do this. This app is awesome in the way it shows you what nutrients your food has, what you are low on, and how to get more of it in other food sources! Not to mention it explains how each nutrient is good for you and symptoms of deficiency. Super cool and well thought out, and easy to navigate. I did find that there are a few things that it doesn't track such as iodine and a few others but overall great app!
  • False listing

As someone else wrote, I was astonished I couldn’t even try out the app to see if it fit any of my needs without paying the fee. I could even enter a diary item without their demanding the fee. That’s not in app purchases, that’s a cost for the app. I can’t use anything from a company dishonest when it is so easy to be honest. Deleted.
  • Outstanding

This is what we all need. Not blanket calorie and carb counters, as if that was the most important and only nutritional value that exists. Actual nutrients, which far outweigh the value of mere caloric intake and detailed info on each specific one, suggestions and tips on optimizing each one, and even suggestions on what to eat next to fill in missing nutrition gaps. Super granular, super perfect. While carbs and calories might be important if all you care about is how much you weigh, actual health is much deeper and more complex than simply counting your calories and “eating greens” and “being active” by “walking”. This app effectively lets you get down to the individual level with your nutrient intake and take control of your diet and life in a much more precise way than worrying about not eating bread. Be aware though, people are too lazy to be accurate in their own lives and need apps to hold their hand, so 99 percent of the user submitted items have nutrition facts that are waaaay off, sometimes to the point of not even being the same thing. Input the info yourself if you want accuracy. This is the only drawback for me: the amount of time to see all the other people put the wrong info in or most likely didn’t even bother to and then have to go put it in myself, researching online and comparing with the actual label on the bottle.
  • Could be made better

I use this app instead of others because if tracks vitamins and minerals. It is, however, a little difficult to enter food. I wish this had a barcode scanner like some of the other apps do that would automatically pull up the nutritional information without having to hunt for it in the search.
  • My favorite app!

    By Borgelise
Unlike other food diaries, this application counts everything: macros, vitamins, minerals, and even antioxidants. I can see where the gaps in my nutrition is on a daily basis, adjust and edit caloric needs based on percentage of macros, edit nutrition goals (I.e. adjusting daily vitamin intake), put in recipes to track nutrition, and enter in my own ingredients. Healthful recipes and their nutrition content are already available to search, along with links to sites with those recipes. An update that I would like to see is the nutrition tracking of specific types of fat that are being consumed. Currently, the app will differentiate between intake of linoleic or alpha linoleic fatty acids, but it does not differentiate between intake of saturated, monounsaturated, or polyunsaturated fats. Otherwise, I am very happy with this app and have used it in conjunction with calorie restriction to make sure that I am getting my nutrition too!
  • No barcode scanner

I normally use MyFitnessPal but I recently went Vegan and decided I needed something that’d keep better track of my nutrients. I love the breakdown of nutrients but the app isn’t very user friendly. You can’t copy past ingredients and most of the time adding a recipe won’t work. And there isn’t a barcode scanner to scan items. They have to be entered manually.
  • Could use a few improvements

Wish it had a scanning option like other apps to make adding foods easier.
