Redundant, redundant and oh did I say redundant? Days old articles posing as today’s news. Gentlemen, ladies, take a rhetoric class.

I really enjoy the crosswords and do them every day. Sometimes frustrating how slow the app seems to be and the crossword page is error prone. Also sometimes the 'keyboard' wont come up or comes up wrong. So far I can restart it and it will come up second time. And, when rotating the crossword the iPad reverts back to its keyboard and have to restart puzzle to fix. This happened with my old iPad, but now happens with my new one too, so must be the app not the iPad.

In the past, I really enjoyed this app. There were no major problems. Once in a while there was a glitch, but then it was resolved. Now it is constantly freezing up or shows only a blank screen. When it finally does show articles, it’s old stuff. I don’t want to give up on the HC app, but sure wish these problems were taken care so I could start reading the news on it again. Thank you so much. Uninstalling and reinstalling fixed the problem and I have had not had any problems since. Love it! Thank you again for your fast response and helping solve the problem.

Once you get to the daily paper, the app is average. Getting the newest edition to download, however, is by far the worst experience I have had on the Internet. What is wrong with your server?
  • Usable. Barely.

So this is how newspapers die. And now on 2.2.6. Other than the feature that is supposed to update to today's news in the morning being added (how is that a feature? Isn't that what a newspaper is?) I can't discern any real changes. Still crashes every morning, still takes over a minute to load stories that are allegedly already downloaded to the device. I'm on a 100MB/s connection anyway - what takes so long to get a few kb of text to display? It does seem that one change has been made - the touch targets for the "X" to close the pop-up ads seems much smaller. I'm getting sent to Safari to view the ads far more often now. Now on 2.1.5. The app only crashes between 3 and 10 times every morning, and the editorial cartoons update at least once every two weeks. So, I guess that's an improvement. Or, maybe it's just consistency. With the 2.0.3 update, this app is now just barely usable. It's at least mostly responsive, and frequently opens the article you're trying to read within a few seconds. At least half the times I open the app it doesn't lock up. The "In today's paper" section seems to actually have today's news and only today's news. It's still not like a newspaper since you get only a shortened headline until you click the link...but it's an improvement. And many of the features still don't show up there, like the comics or the editorial cartoons. You can get to the editorial cartoon by clicking on the letters to the editor, unfortunately it shows yesterday's cartoon. That's an improvement from before, when it didn't update for days. **update: be advised that while the "In today's paper" section seems to actually be today's news (mostly), the sidebar that activates when you are reading a story from there does NOT have all of the headlines from "In today's news." No easy navigation for you! Also, I'm seeing news from yesterday show up there now. The regular portions of the app still have the "latest news," or stories from the Internet, sprinkled throughout the sections with no way to turn it off or discern what was in the paper vs. Internet stories. Articles from several days ago are still sprinkled in, again with no way to turn them off or tell when they might have been included. Navigation is still a train wreck. So, it's barely usable. I'm keeping with it because I like to support the local paper, I want local news, and I like getting the comics. I cancelled my NYT trial (wow, *that's* a newspaper app!) because of the improvements, but without more improvements very, very soon I'll still be leaving for the NYT. I expect better from an app that was developed for three large newspaper markets (Houston, San Antonio and San Francisco).

This app, which was intended as an upgrade of a good prior version, was horrible at first (e.g., very unstable and continually crashing/locking up) and almost unusable. However, the developers have continued to make fixes and it is vastly improved. It has a good format and it has been several months since I have experienced any stability issues. Perhaps it was rolled out too soon, but whatever the reason, I give them credit for fixing the problems. It’s now a solid newspaper app and well worth using.
  • Can’t deliver on time

The entire reason why I get this online version is because I don’t get the paper version until up to 8am on weekends and 7:30 on weekdays. It should be here at 6am for early risers. The ap is hard to maneuver, have to log on several times and just a bad program. I would consider just going to the online version but it is so bad!

I initially rated this app one star but it’s finally been fixed. No more problems for me. The app opens right away on my iPad mini 4 and has not crashed once since the update. I can now reliably read the paper. Thank you.
